Northampton is a small historic town with a population of about 850, located 50kms north of Geraldton and about 20kms inland. Outside of Perth, Northampton is one of Western Australia's oldest settlements with lead mining commencing in 1848, followed by copper mining in 1855. In 1879, WA's first railway was laid which ran from here in Northampton to the port of Geraldton. In the early 1990's, Northampton was officially declared an 'Historic Town' by the National Trust.
Review of Northampton by Akerz, 23rd July 2007It was early on a rainy morning when we arrived at Northampton, so apart from a few bog laps up and down the main street admiring the old churches, we didn't really get to see or do anything. Things to see in Northampton include: - St Mary's Catholic Church - Built in 1936 by the famous architect/priest, Monsignor John Hawes.
- Northampton Family Store - One of the oldest stores in WA still operating and features old wooden counters and cash register from an earlier era.
- Old Railway Station - An Historical display is available for viewing at the Old Railway Station, located at the east end of Mary Street.
- Chiverton House Museum - This building was constructed in 1896 and now houses a display of local historical artefacts and old farming equipment
- Annual Airing of the Quilts - Held in October, the tradition of hanging quilts down the main street continues.
- Monthly Markets - 1st Saturday each month, held in Kings Park, cnr of Essex St and Hampton Rd.
- Hampton Road Heritage Walk - This 2km walk takes you past 37 historical buildings including the Miners Arm Hotel (1868) and the Old Railway Station (1870).
Things to see near Northampton include: - Aboriginal Cave Paintings - Found at the mouth of the Bowes River, 17km west.
- Oakabella Homestead - Remote homestead open for lunch and coffee most days. Tours of the haunted buildings are available.
- Horrocks Beach - Good fishing and surfing along beautiful beaches.
