Leeman, Western Australia - Leeman Caravan Park
Leeman is primarily a cray-fishing town but also known as a fantastic location to go windsurfing in the summer months (due to the strong coastal winds). The town was formerly known as Snag Island but later renamed to Leeman in 1971. Snag Island is a small island located just off the shore towards the north end of town. Leeman was named after Abraham Leeman van Santwits, the navigator credited in rescuing survivors of the Dutch ship 'Gilt Dragon', which came to grief near this spot in 1656.
Akerblog & Review - July 12th 2007 We stayed in Leeman Caravan Park (formerly Snag Island Caravan Park) overnight not venturing far from our Van other than a quick hop, skip and a jump down to see the sea shells at the sea shore. We thought there wasn't really anything to do in town other except sample a crab sandwich at the Crazzels Cove roadhouse (which we didn't). Inside the Leeman tourist phamplet the next day, the list of things to do included: - Exploring the Stockyard Gully National Park and Caves
- Windsurfing (summer)
- Snorkel ling along the rocky coastline
- Fishing along the coastline or off the local jetty.
- Visit Mt Leseur (spectacular in the spring)
- Viewing the natural beauty of the coastline and swimming at the beaches.
- Visiting Point Louise & Little Anchorage
- Sea Lion Tours
Most of these activities are nearby rather than in Leeman itself. The same activities are listed by nearby towns such as Eneabba & GreenHead. Annual Events held in Leeman include the Snag Island Gala Day (Easter Sunday), Bowling Carnival (May) & the Snag Island Windsurfing Classic (Nov/Dec).
