Yanchep National Park - Yanchep, Western Australia

Yanchep National Park offers several bush walks (including multi-day hikes), guided tours, wildflowers (seasonal), heritage buildings, 9 hole public golf course, wetlands, boat-hire (rowboats only), caves, bird-life, kangaroos, koalas & more. The name 'Yanchep' is derived from an Aboriginal (Nyoongar) word for the bulrush (yanget) which grow in the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain. Akereview & Blog for Yanchep National Park - 8th July 2007
Ok, so this wasn't technically part of our trip. We actually visited Yanchep National Park about a month ago as a trial run in the Akervan (note the lack of trademark Akerhats in the photos).

We arrived at Yanchep after dark with no map and so after driving around in circles for a while, we discovered the Caberet Cave where a 'surprise wedding' was taking place (the wanna-be-bride sprung it on her partner and the poor sucker siad yes).

The next dat we hiked the 'Ghosthouse Walk Trail' which took us half the time indicated on the walking map (available at the McNess House Visitor Centre). The 'Ghosthouse' wasn't all it was cooked up to be, it was merely just the ruins of an old house where only one solitary doorway remained standing.

After our hike, we popped into the heritage listed Yanchep Inn for a well earnt beverage. The Yanchep Inn offers a range of accomoodation, a restaurant, cafe, bars, pool room and beer garden.

Ample bbq and picnic fascilites are available on Wagardu Lark (Loch McNess) which we made full use of to cook up some veggie burgers for lunch.

To burn off our lunch we hired a rowboat ($13 for an hour) and went for a paddle on the lake. Being big & bulky, they were not the easiest of vessels to manoeuvre for a couple of amateurs. We would suggest perhaps brining your own kayak into Yanchep National Park if you can. Other things to do in Yanchep National Park (that we didn't get around to) include:

  • Crystal Cave Tour
An underground world of limestone just waiting to be explored
  • Yonderup Adventure Cave Tour
For this more adventurous cave tour, you will need to wear appropriate clothing (they may get dirty) and footwear (enclosed shoes). You are provided with a hard hat and torch
  • Other Hikes & Walk Tracks
Yanchep National Park offers numourous walking tracks of varying degrees including a hike designed for several days. Campsites similar to those found on the Bibbulmun Track are provided along the way.
  • Adventure Caving for Groups
Minimum groups of 10 and no children under 12 permitted. Get a group of mates together and explore an underground world not seen by many. Bookings in advance are required for this one.
  • Aboriginal Experience
Learn about the native Nooyngar people who have lived in Western Australia's South West. Be informed about their seasonal movements, discover their language and hear how knowledge was passed down from one generation to the next.
  • Koala Boardwalk
A boardwalk has been constructed through the Koala compound to give visitors a good idea of what Koalas are like in their Natural habitat. The boardwalk construction in Yanchep National Park travels for 250 metres (this is a free activity).
